Many visitors to Auroville arrive by train or bus at Pondicherry rather than by air. The last leg – from the railway station or bus stand to your guesthouse in Auroville – is short on the map, but it involves crossing town and leaving the main roads for Auroville’s quieter, less well-signed lanes. A little planning saves a lot of haggling and searching.
This guide covers the distances, your transport options, arriving early or late, and how to handle luggage. If you are flying into Chennai instead, see our Chennai Airport to Pondicherry and Auroville guide.

Where you arrive
Puducherry railway station
The station is at the southern edge of the old town, on Subbiah Salai (South Boulevard), where the boulevard ring road around the old town meets. It is the end of a 38 km branch line from Villupuram Junction on the Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur main line. Direct trains run to and from Chennai Egmore – including the Auroville Express – and a number of longer-distance services start or end here.
Many long-distance trains do not come into Pondicherry at all and stop only at Villupuram Junction, about 40 km away by road. If your ticket is to Villupuram, plan for a taxi from there rather than the short transfer described below. Check current train timings on the official Indian Railways enquiry and booking sites, as schedules change.
Pondicherry bus stand
Government and private buses from Chennai, Bengaluru, Tiruvannamalai and other towns arrive at the main bus stand on Maraimalai Adigal Salai. Some long-distance private operators use their own pick-up and drop points instead, so check where your bus actually stops when you book.
If you are coming from Chennai along the East Coast Road and staying in Auroville, you pass the Auroville turn-off before reaching town. Some passengers ask to be let off near the Auroville junction on the ECR; whether that is possible depends on the bus and the conductor, so ask when you board.
How far is it to Auroville?
Auroville is spread out, so the distance depends on where you are staying. As a guide:
- Railway station to the Auroville Visitors Centre: roughly 14–15 km
- Bus stand to the Auroville Visitors Centre: roughly 12–13 km
- Travel time by car: usually 30–45 minutes, more at peak hours or in heavy rain
Your options
Pre-booked taxi
The most straightforward option, especially with luggage, children or a late arrival. A pre-booked driver meets you at the station exit or bus stand and takes you to your guesthouse door – useful in Auroville, where many places are down unnamed lanes and are hard to find in the dark. Share your guesthouse’s map pin with the driver in advance.
Our taxi pickup and drop service covers Pondicherry railway station and bus stand transfers to Auroville and back. Send your train or bus details on WhatsApp and we will confirm.
Auto-rickshaw
Autos wait outside both the station and the bus stand. They are fine for one or two people with modest bags. Agree the fare clearly before you get in, show the driver the exact location on your phone, and be aware that the ride is long for an auto and the last stretch can be on rough lanes. Many auto drivers know the Visitors Centre but not individual communities.
Scooter delivery
If you plan to rent a scooter for your stay anyway, it can make sense to have it ready from day one. We offer delivery, so you can arrange for a scooter to be dropped at your guesthouse in Auroville – or, with light luggage, collected in town. You will need your driving licence, an original photo ID and a ₹500 cash deposit, as set out in our rental terms.
We do not recommend riding a scooter from the station with a large suitcase. Take a taxi or auto with your luggage and have the scooter delivered to where you are staying.
Local bus
Town buses and buses running up the ECR pass near the Auroville turn-off, but they do not go into the township, and you would still face a walk or auto ride to most guesthouses. With luggage, it is rarely worth the saving in time and effort.
Arriving early in the morning or late at night
Some trains and many overnight buses arrive very early in the morning. At that hour there are fewer autos, Auroville’s roads are dark, and guesthouse reception may not be staffed. Pre-book your transfer, tell your guesthouse when you expect to arrive and keep their phone number handy.
Late at night the same applies. Avoid riding a scooter on unlit roads in the dark with luggage – it is the riskiest way to begin a holiday.
Which option suits you?
A quick way to decide, based on who is travelling and what you are carrying:
- Solo, light backpack, daytime arrival: auto-rickshaw, or a scooter delivered to your guesthouse
- Couple with suitcases: pre-booked taxi, then a scooter delivered for the rest of your stay
- Family or group: pre-booked taxi – one vehicle, door to door, no bargaining
- Arriving before dawn or after dark: pre-booked taxi, with the guesthouse told your arrival time
- Arriving at Villupuram Junction: pre-booked taxi for the roughly 40 km drive, rather than waiting for a connecting train
Luggage tips
- A large suitcase needs a car. Autos can take one or two medium bags; scooters take a backpack at most.
- Keep valuables, documents and your phone charger in a small bag on your lap or in the footwell, not in the boot.
- In the monsoon months (roughly October to December), pack a waterproof cover for your bag.
- If you are moving between a hotel in town and a guesthouse in Auroville, use a taxi for the bags and a scooter for yourself.
- Note the vehicle number of your auto or taxi, especially on early-morning or late-night arrivals.
Going back to the station or bus stand
Allow more time on the way out than on the way in. Town traffic builds in the evening, and trains will not wait. As a rule of thumb, leave Auroville at least an hour before departure. If you rented a scooter, plan the return so that you are not riding to the station with luggage – arrange the handover at your guesthouse and take a taxi.
