Renting a Bike in Pondicherry & Auroville: 12 Tips Before You Ride

A scooter is the best way to explore Pondicherry and Auroville – but a few simple checks make the difference between a great trip and a stressful one. Here are our local tips for renting a bike in Pondicherry.

Before you rent

1. Carry a valid driving licence for two-wheelers. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit with their home licence.
2. Keep an original photo ID ready – most rental shops hold it until you return the vehicle.
3. Ask about the deposit and how it is refunded. Ours is a simple refundable deposit of ₹500.
4. Choose the right vehicle. A gearless scooter (Activa, Access) is easiest for town and Auroville. Pick a 150cc bike for long ECR rides.
5. Compare weekly and monthly rates – they are much cheaper per day if you are staying longer.

When you pick up the vehicle

1. Take photos or a video of the vehicle from all sides, including existing scratches.
2. Check brakes, lights, horn and tyres before riding off.
3. Note the fuel level – return it the same way.

On the road

1. Always wear a helmet – rider and pillion. Puducherry police have enforced compulsory helmets for both since January 2025, with fines of around ₹1,000 and possible licence suspension. Tamil Nadu has similar rules.
2. Watch out on the ECR for fast buses and trucks, and for cattle and dogs on smaller roads.
3. Avoid riding at night on unlit roads in Auroville – the red-earth roads can be dark and uneven.
4. Park legally. In White Town, use designated two-wheeler parking; the Promenade road is closed to vehicles from about 6 PM to 7:30 AM.
