Pondicherry is a year-round destination, but the weather changes a lot between seasons. In short: the best time to visit Pondicherry is from late October to March, when days are warm and evenings are pleasant.
In this guide
Winter: November to February (peak season)
The most comfortable time to visit, with pleasant days and cooler nights – perfect for riding a scooter to beaches and Auroville. December and January are the busiest months, especially around Christmas and New Year, so book stays and bike rentals early.
Summer: March to June
Hot and humid, especially from April to June. Mornings and evenings are still enjoyable at the beach. Prices are lower and crowds are thinner. Plan outdoor sightseeing early in the day.
Monsoon: October to December
Unlike much of India, Pondicherry gets most of its rain from the north-east monsoon, roughly October to December. Expect heavy showers and occasional cyclone warnings. The sea can be rough, so avoid swimming. Rain usually comes in bursts, with clear days in between.
July to September
Warm with some rain. A quieter time for visitors who prefer fewer crowds.
Festivals worth planning around
- Christmas and New Year – festive White Town and busy beaches.
- Pongal (January) – the Tamil harvest festival.
- International Yoga Festival (4–7 January) – held every year by Puducherry Tourism.
- Auroville’s birthday (28 February) – a bonfire gathering at dawn at the Matrimandir amphitheatre.
What to pack
- Light cotton clothes and a hat
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- A light rain jacket from October to December
- Modest clothing for temples and the ashram
