1. Mahabalipuram (about 95 km)
The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas and Arjuna’s Penance are carved from granite. The drive along the East Coast Road is beautiful, with the sea on one side.
2. Tiruvannamalai (about 105 km)
Home to the huge Arunachaleswarar Temple and the Ramana Maharshi Ashram at the foot of Arunachala hill. Many visitors walk the 14 km Girivalam path around the hill.
3. Pichavaram Mangroves (about 70–80 km)
One of the largest mangrove forests in India, often described as the second largest in the world after the Sundarbans. Take a rowing boat through narrow water channels lined with mangrove trees. Best combined with Chidambaram.
4. Chidambaram (about 65 km)
The Thillai Nataraja Temple is famous for its golden roof and its dedication to Shiva as the cosmic dancer.
5. Gingee Fort (about 70 km)
A massive hill fort spread across three hills. Climbing Rajagiri hill is a good workout with great views – start early to avoid the heat.
6. Cuddalore and Silver Beach (about 25 km)
A short trip south to a long, uncrowded beach.
7. Thanjavur (about 170 km)
A long but rewarding day trip to the Brihadeeswarar Temple, another UNESCO site. Better as an overnight trip.
