Ousteri lake, also called Oussudu or Ossudu, is the largest lake in the Puducherry region and one of the easiest wildlife outings you can make on a rented scooter. It lies only a short ride inland from Pondicherry town, yet the mood is completely different: open water, paddy fields, palms and, in the cooler months, a great many birds.
This guide covers where the lake is, how to ride there, which birds you are likely to see, what we know about boating, and how to make the visit pleasant for you and for the wildlife. If you enjoy it, the same kind of morning works at Kaluveli further north, which we describe in our Kaluveli Lake bird ride guide.

Where is Ousteri Lake?
The lake straddles a border. Its water spread is about 800 hectares, of which roughly 390 hectares fall inside the Union Territory of Puducherry and the rest in Tamil Nadu. It is a man-made tank, built originally to store water, that has grown into an important wetland over the years.
Because it sits across two jurisdictions, it is protected twice. The Puducherry side was declared the Oussudu Bird Sanctuary in 2008, the first wildlife sanctuary in the Union Territory. The Tamil Nadu side was notified as a sanctuary in 2015, so the whole wetland is now protected.
Tip: On road signs and maps you will see several spellings: Ousteri, Oussudu, Osudu and Ossudu. They all mean the same lake.
Route and distance to Ousteri Lake by scooter
From Pondicherry town the lake is roughly 10 km inland, to the west of the city, along the road that heads towards Vazhudavur. At an easy pace, allowing for town traffic on the way out, plan on around half an hour each way, longer if you stop for photos.
From Auroville you ride south-west across the rural belt behind the coast rather than into the old town. The village roads here are narrow and the turns are not always signposted, so set the lake as your destination in a maps app before you leave and check it at junctions rather than while moving.
| Starting point | Rough distance | What the ride is like |
|---|---|---|
| Pondicherry town | About 10 km | Busy town roads at first, then a quieter road past villages and fields |
| Auroville | Check your maps app | Mostly rural lanes; few signposts, so navigation matters more |
Any of our scooters handles this ride comfortably. A Honda Activa or Suzuki Access 125 is the easiest choice if you are new to Indian roads; if you are unsure, our guide on choosing a scooter or a motorbike may help.
Birds at Ousteri Lake and the best season
The wetland supports a large number of species, and around 40 migratory species are reported to arrive from about November onwards. That makes roughly November to March the most rewarding period for birdwatchers, with resident birds present all year.
Birds commonly reported at the sanctuary include:
- Painted stork and Asian openbill, the two storks most visitors notice first
- Black-headed (white) ibis feeding along the margins
- Egrets, including the great egret, and little cormorants drying their wings
- White-breasted waterhen slipping in and out of the reeds
- Spotted owlet, golden oriole and tailorbird in the trees around the bund
Sightings change with water levels and the year’s rainfall, so treat this as a guide rather than a promise. A small pair of binoculars and a free bird-identification app make the visit far more interesting.
Boating at Ousteri
Puducherry Tourism has run a small boat club on the lake for visitors, and boats are often seen moored near the shore. Travel listings mention motor, pedal and rowing boats operating during daytime hours.
Tip: Check before you go: boat types, timings and fares change, and boating can be paused after heavy rain or for maintenance. Ask at the boat counter on arrival, or check with Puducherry Tourism. We do not quote prices here.
If you do go out on the water, choose a slow, quiet option and ask the operator to keep a respectful distance from roosting and feeding birds.
Best time of day for an Ousteri lake ride
Go early. The first two or three hours after sunrise bring the most bird activity, softer light for photos and cooler air for riding. By late morning the heat builds quickly, birds rest in the shade and the glare off the water makes viewing harder.
Late afternoon is the next best window, but leave enough time to ride back before dark. Rural lanes have little street lighting, and cattle, cyclists and unlit tractors are much harder to see at dusk.
If you are visiting during the north-east monsoon (roughly October to December), check the forecast first and read our tips for riding a scooter in the monsoon. The lake is full and beautiful after rain, but the side roads can be muddy and slippery.
What to carry
- Your driving licence, and the helmet that comes free with every rental
- Water, sunscreen, a hat and a light long-sleeved layer against sun and mosquitoes
- Binoculars and a phone or camera with a zoom
- A little cash, since rural tea stalls and counters may not take cards
- A small bag for your own rubbish, because bins can be scarce
Riding tips for the rural roads
- Ride slower than you think you need to. Village roads have speed breakers that are not always painted.
- Expect cows, goats, dogs and children on the road, especially near houses and temples.
- Give way to buses and lorries on narrow stretches; pull over and let them pass.
- Keep left, use your horn lightly before blind bends, and avoid riding on the soft edge of the bund.
- Park only where other vehicles are parked, away from gates and farm tracks, and lock the steering.
Our article on Pondicherry traffic rules and the helmet law covers the basics you need for this and every other ride.
Respectful behaviour around birds
Ousteri is a protected sanctuary, and local news has reported poaching problems here in recent years, so careful visitors genuinely matter. Keep your voice down, watch from the bank or the path rather than walking to the water’s edge, and never throw food or stones to make birds fly.
Do not fly a drone, and switch off music. If a group of birds looks restless or starts lifting off, you are too close: step back and wait. Leaving with all your plastic is the simplest thing anyone can do for the lake.
Rent a scooter for your lake ride
