Almost every first visit to Auroville begins at the Visitors Centre. It is the public face of the township: the place where you watch the introductory film, pick up a free pass for the Matrimandir viewing point, ask questions at the information desk and, usually, stop for a coffee or a browse through the boutiques.
The centre is a cluster of low buildings set among trees, with exhibition spaces, an information and guest service, shops, a bookshop and cafés. This guide explains what each part offers, how the Matrimandir passes work, current timings, and the practical side of riding there from Pondicherry or elsewhere in Auroville.

What You'll Find at the Visitors Centre
Exhibition and introductory films
The exhibition area uses photographs to show daily life and work in Auroville, from farming and forestry to education and architecture. One of its highlights is a detailed rosewood scale model of the Matrimandir and its gardens, which helps you understand the scale of the building before you see it from the viewing point.
Short videos, Introduction to Auroville and Introduction to Matrimandir, are screened in English and Tamil, with other languages available through subtitles. Watching the Matrimandir video is part of getting a viewing point pass, so allow time for it.
Information Service
The information desk is the place to ask about the Matrimandir, current events, guest houses and how Auroville works. At the time of writing, the Information Service is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm. A separate Guest Accommodation Service helps with stays in Auroville; it keeps shorter hours and is closed on Sundays.
Cafés
There are two cafés and a food court. The Right Path Café and Dreamers’ Café open from early morning into the evening, with shorter hours on Mondays. Exact hours vary by season, so treat them as a guide. They are convenient for breakfast before the viewing point or a cold drink after the walk back.
Boutiques and bookshop
The boutiques sell products made in and around Auroville: incense, clothing, tableware, jewellery, home furnishings, aromatherapy items and organic food. The Seagull Bookshop stocks books on Integral Yoga, Indian culture and Auroville itself. Boutiques usually stay open a little later than the information desk – check the timings on the day.
Matrimandir Viewing Point Passes
The Matrimandir, the large golden sphere at the centre of Auroville, cannot be approached freely. What most day visitors do is go to the viewing point, a spot in the gardens from which you see the Matrimandir from a distance. It works like this:
- Passes are issued free of charge at the Information Service in the Visitors Centre, after you watch the introductory video.
- At the time of writing, the viewing point is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, but pass issue follows the Information Service hours, so arrive well before closing.
- The walk from the Visitors Centre takes about 10 minutes along a shaded path; a longer route of about 30 minutes passes through the International Zone.
- A free electric shuttle is available for people who find it hard to walk, and a free bus can bring you back from the viewing point if needed.
Visiting the Inner Chamber
Going inside the Matrimandir for concentration in the Inner Chamber is a separate process and cannot be arranged on arrival. Bookings are made online through the official Matrimandir access form, ideally at least a week ahead. At the time of writing, only visitors aged 10 and above can go in, bookings are individual (no group bookings), visits are not held on Sundays and Tuesdays, and you must report at the Visitors Centre early in the morning at the time given in your confirmation email – late arrivals are not admitted.

Rules and Etiquette
The area around the Matrimandir is kept quiet, so keep your voice low on the path and at the viewing point, and follow any instructions from volunteers and staff. Auroville discourages single-use plastic, so carry a refillable bottle – the centre offers free drinking water. Remember that Auroville is a place where people live and work, not a theme park: ask before photographing residents, and stay on marked paths.
Getting There by Scooter
From central Pondicherry, the usual route is north along the East Coast Road (ECR) to the signposted turning for Auroville, then inland on the Auroville road towards the Visitors Centre. The ride is roughly 10–12 km and typically takes 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic and where you start. Inside Auroville, roads are narrower and shared with cyclists and pedestrians, so ride slowly.
Vehicles are not allowed on the path to the Matrimandir. Park two-wheelers in the parking area near the Visitors Centre, following the attendants’ directions, and continue on foot or by the shuttle. The centre also offers bicycle rentals if you want to explore nearby on pedal power.

When to Go
Mornings are best. You beat the midday heat on the walk to the viewing point, and the queue for passes is usually shorter before the tour groups arrive. Weekends and the December–January holiday season are the busiest. The most comfortable months overall are roughly December to February; from March to June it is hot, and the north-east monsoon (roughly October to December) can bring heavy showers. Nearby Stops to Combine
Plan a half-day or full day around the Visitors Centre. The Auroville Botanical Gardens lie a short ride to the south (visits by prior appointment, closed Sundays).
