Auroville Beach Guide: Things to Know Before You Go

How to get to Auroville Beach

The beach is about 10 km north of Pondicherry town, just off the East Coast Road (ECR). Turn towards the sea at the Auroville Beach signboard. A scooter is the easiest way to get here – you can rent one near the beach and park close to the sand.

Best time to visit

  • Sunrise – the beach faces east, so mornings are beautiful and cool.
  • Late afternoon – for a walk and snacks at the cafés.
  • November to March – the most pleasant weather. See our best time to visit guide.

Is it safe to swim?

The sea along this coast can have strong currents and sudden drops, and there are rocky breakwaters in places. Paddling near the shore is common, but swimming is risky – especially during the monsoon. Always follow local warnings and lifeguard advice where available.

Food and cafés

Several small cafés and shacks near the beach road serve coffee, fresh juice, seafood and snacks. Many close by late evening, so plan dinner in Auroville or Pondicherry.

Nearby beaches

  • Serenity Beach – a short ride south, popular for surfing lessons.
  • Promenade Beach – Pondicherry’s famous seafront walk.
  • Paradise Beach – reached by boat from Chunnambar.
