Paradise Beach Chunnambar is the long sandbar beach south of Pondicherry that you can only reach by boat. You leave your vehicle at the Chunnambar Boat House, cross the backwaters on a short ferry ride, and land on a wide strip of sand between the river and the Bay of Bengal.
It is one of the most popular half-day outings from Pondicherry and Auroville, and an easy ride on a rented scooter. This guide explains where it is, how the boat house works, what to know about swimming, and how to plan your visit. For other options along the coast, see our best beaches in Pondicherry and Auroville.

Where Paradise Beach is
The Chunnambar Boat House stands near the mouth of the Chunnambar River, where it meets the Bay of Bengal. Incredible India, the Government of India’s tourism site, puts it about 8 km south of Puducherry town. The beach itself lies across the backwater, on the sandy strip that separates the river from the sea.
The boat house is near Nonankuppam, just off the Cuddalore road that runs south from Pondicherry. It is well signposted locally, and Google Maps finds it as “Chunnambar Boat House”.
Riding to Paradise Beach Chunnambar
From Pondicherry town the ride is short and simple: head south on the Cuddalore road and turn off towards the boat house. It is a comfortable trip on a Honda Activa or Suzuki Access 125, and an easy first ride if you have just picked up your scooter.
From Auroville you first ride into Pondicherry and cross the town from north to south, so the trip takes noticeably longer. Avoid the busiest office hours in town if you can. If you are new to the roads here, read our Pondicherry traffic rules and helmet guide before you set off.
| Starting point | Route in short | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pondicherry town | South on the Cuddalore road | About 8 km to the boat house |
| Auroville | Into Pondicherry, through town, then south | Longer; town traffic is the slow part |
| Railway station or bus stand | South through town to the Cuddalore road | Easy by taxi or scooter |
Parking your scooter
The boat house has a parking area for two-wheelers and cars. Lock the handle, take your helmet with you or lock it to the scooter, and keep nothing valuable in the storage box. Parking charges, if any, are set at the site, so check when you arrive.
How the boat house works
There is no road or bridge to the beach, so everyone crosses by boat. You buy a ferry ticket at the counter, wait for your boat, and ride along the backwater to the beach landing. Guides describe the crossing as roughly 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the boat and the water.
The boat house also offers backwater boating on its own, such as pedal boats and motor boats. Check what is running on the day, because the choice changes with the season and the weather.
Timings, last boat and fees
Incredible India lists the boat house as open from 9 am to 6 pm. Other guides give slightly different hours, and visitors report that the last boats to the beach leave well before closing time, often in the mid-afternoon. Ask at the counter what time the last boat back from the beach leaves, and plan around it.
Ferry fares and any entry charges change, and there are different prices for shared and private boats. We are not quoting figures here: check the current rates at the ticket counter or with Pondicherry Tourism before you go, and carry cash in case card or UPI payment is not working.
Tip: Boats can be suspended in rough weather, especially during the north-east monsoon (roughly October to December). On a stormy day, call ahead or have a backup plan.
Sea safety and swimming
We could not find clear official guidance on whether swimming at Paradise Beach Chunnambar is permitted. Travel guides disagree: some say swimming is allowed only in certain areas, others say it is not allowed because of occasional strong waves. Treat that uncertainty as a reason to be careful.
The open sea along this coast can have strong waves and currents, and the river mouth nearby adds moving water. Our advice is to paddle at the edge rather than swim out, and never to go in after drinking or when the sea is rough.
- Follow any flags, signs or instructions from staff and police on the beach
- Stay out of the water at the river mouth and the backwater channels
- Keep children within arm’s reach at the water’s edge
- Don’t swim alone, after dark, or during the monsoon
- If you are caught in a current, stay calm and swim parallel to the shore before heading in
Surfers and strong swimmers looking for waves usually head north instead; our Serenity Beach guide covers surfing and safety there.
Best time to visit
For weather, November to February is the most pleasant season, with cooler days and calmer seas once the monsoon eases. March to June is hot, so go early. Our month-by-month guide to Pondicherry has more detail.
Within the day, aim to reach the boat house soon after opening. Queues build on weekends and holidays, and the midday sand gets very hot. Weekday mornings are usually the quietest time to enjoy Paradise Beach Chunnambar.
What to carry
- Drinking water; there is little shade on the sand
- A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Cash for ferry tickets, parking and snacks
- A dry bag or zip pouch for your phone on the boat
- A towel and a change of clothes if you plan to get wet
- A bag for your rubbish, so the beach stays clean
Wear sandals you can slip off on the sand, and keep your helmet and riding jacket safe at the parking area or in a locked storage box.
Rent a scooter or book a taxi
A scooter is the easiest way to reach Paradise Beach Chunnambar and stop at other beaches on the same day. Rent a Honda Activa or Suzuki Access 125 on bike rental in Pondicherry or bike rental in Auroville, on hourly, daily, weekly or monthly plans. Bring your original photo ID and a ₹500 cash deposit; the helmet is free, delivery is available, and please return the scooter with the same fuel level.
