Serenity Beach is the strip of sand at Kottakuppam, just north of Pondicherry town. It was known locally as Thanthirayan Kuppam beach or simply Kottakuppam beach before the cafés, guesthouses and surf schools arrived and the name Serenity stuck. Today it is where most people in Pondicherry go to learn to surf, watch the sunrise or spend a slow morning by the sea.
Strictly speaking it is not in Pondicherry at all: Kottakuppam is in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district, a few minutes over the border. For visitors that makes little difference, but it is a useful reminder that you cross between Puducherry and Tamil Nadu several times a day around here, and traffic police operate on both sides.

Where it is and how to get there
Serenity Beach is around 5 km north of White Town. Ride north out of town through Muthialpet onto the East Coast Road (ECR) and look for the turn towards the sea at Kottakuppam – Google Maps marks it clearly. From the town centre it usually takes 15–20 minutes, depending on traffic at the northern edge of town.
From Auroville it is closer still: come down to the ECR from the Auroville road and turn south towards Pondicherry; the beach turn-off is a short ride away. That makes Serenity an easy sunrise stop if you are staying in or near Auroville.
The last stretch is a narrow lane through the village with houses, small shops, children and dogs. Ride at walking pace and give way to people on foot.
- Distance: about 5 km from White Town
- Time: roughly 15–20 minutes by scooter
- Road: ECR north, then a village lane to the beach
- State: Tamil Nadu (Kottakuppam, Villupuram district)
Parking your scooter
There is no large formal car park. Most people park two-wheelers along the lanes near the beach or at the café or surf school they are visiting. Park where you are not blocking a gate, a house entrance or a fishing family’s work area, lock the handlebar and take your helmet and valuables with you or ask the place you are visiting if you can leave them.
Avoid riding onto the sand. It is easy to get stuck, and sand and salt water are hard on a scooter. Our rental bikes should come back in the condition they left – see the rental terms for the details.
The surf scene
Serenity is the centre of Pondicherry’s small surf community. Several surf schools operate along the beach, offering beginner lessons with boards and instructors, as well as board rental for people who already surf. Lessons usually start early in the morning, when the wind is lighter and the sea is calmer.
The beach has a sloping sandy bottom with rock groynes built out into the sea, and the waves are generally friendly for beginners on a good day. Conditions change with the season, the swell and the weather, though, and some days are flat or too rough for lessons. Ask a surf school about the conditions the evening before rather than assuming there will be waves.
If you are booking a lesson, look for a school that explains safety before you go in, keeps beginners in a defined area away from the rocks, and has instructors in the water with you. We do not run surf lessons ourselves, but we are happy to help you get there.
Is it safe to swim at Serenity Beach?
Be cautious. The Bay of Bengal along this coast has strong currents and a steep shore break in places, and swimmers get into trouble on this coast more often than visitors expect. Serenity is not a patrolled swimming beach with flags and lifeguards in the way some visitors expect.
If you go in, stay where surf instructors are working, keep to waist depth, never swim alone and stay well away from the rock groynes, where currents pull along the rocks and waves can throw you onto them. Do not go in at all after dark, after drinking, or when the sea looks rough or a high-wave alert has been issued.
Two simple checks help: look at what the surf schools are doing (if they are not taking beginners out, there is a reason) and look up the INCOIS ocean-state forecast or local news for high-wave warnings during the monsoon months.
- Stay away from the rock groynes in the water
- Watch for jellyfish – they appear on this coast at times
- Do not climb on wet rocks when waves are breaking over them
- Keep children within arm’s reach at the water’s edge
Best time to go
Mornings are the best time at Serenity. Sunrise over the sea is the reason many people come, the light is good, it is cool, and the surf schools are active. By late morning the sun is strong and there is little shade on the sand itself.
Late afternoons are pleasant too, when cafés fill up and families walk along the beach. As across this coast, December to February is the most comfortable season; the northeast monsoon from roughly October to December brings rough seas on some days. Etiquette in a working village
Kottakuppam is a fishing village first and a beach destination second. Boats, nets and catch on the sand are people’s livelihood, so walk around them and ask before photographing anyone. Dress respectfully once you leave the sand – a cover-up or T-shirt for walking through the village is appreciated – and take your rubbish back with you.
What to bring
Pack light – everything has to fit under a scooter seat or in a small backpack.
- Water, sunscreen and a hat; there is little shade on the sand
- A towel and a change of clothes if you plan to surf or paddle
- A small bag for wet things, so salt water does not end up under the seat
- Cash in small notes for tea, coconuts and snacks
- Your licence and the rental papers, since police checks happen on the ECR
Combine it with other beaches
Serenity pairs well with a ride further north to Auroville Beach for a coffee, or back into town for a walk along the Promenade. For a comparison of all the beaches around here, see our best beaches in Pondicherry guide and the Auroville Beach guide. If you are planning your days, the 2-day Pondicherry itinerary by scooter shows how to fit a sunrise beach into a busy trip.
Getting a scooter for the beach
A small automatic scooter is ideal for Serenity Beach – light, easy to park in narrow lanes and with space under the seat for a towel and a change of clothes. We rent the Honda Activa and Suzuki Access 125 among other models, with a helmet included. See bike rental in Pondicherry or bike rental in Auroville, or send your dates on WhatsApp to +91 96265 65138 and we will tell you what is available.
