Most travellers to Pondicherry and Auroville fly into Chennai International Airport (MAA). The road distance is about 150 km, and there are three main ways to cover it.

Option 1: Taxi (fastest and easiest)
A pre-booked taxi takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic when leaving Chennai. The driver meets you at arrivals and drops you at your hotel or guest house – no changes, no luggage hassle. It is the best choice for families, late-night flights and anyone with bags.

Option 2: Bus
From the airport, take a city (MTC) bus or cab to the Kilambakkam bus terminus (KCBT), about 17 km away. Buses to Pondicherry leave from there and take roughly 3 hours or more. With the transfer, the full trip usually takes 4–5 hours. It is the cheapest option but tiring with luggage.
Option 3: Train
Train connections from Chennai to Puducherry are limited, and most routes need a change at Villupuram (about 40 km from Pondicherry). Trains need advance booking and careful timing with your flight, so they suit travellers who are not coming straight from the airport.
Which route does the taxi take?
Drivers choose between the scenic East Coast Road (ECR) along the sea and the inland highway, depending on the time of day and traffic. For Auroville, the ECR route is usually most direct.
