White Town, also called the French Quarter, is the historic heart of Pondicherry. Its straight streets, mustard-yellow villas, bougainvillea and French street names make it one of the most photogenic neighbourhoods in India.

- Promenade Beach – the 1.5 km seafront walk with the Gandhi statue.
- Old Lighthouse – built in 1836 during French rule, near the Promenade.

Best streets for a walk
Rue Romain Rolland, Rue Suffren, Rue Dumas and Rue de la Marine are lined with heritage buildings, boutique hotels and cafés. The area is small enough to explore on foot in 2–3 hours.
When to go
Early morning (for empty streets and soft light) and late afternoon to evening (for the Promenade crowd and cafés). Midday can be hot. The seafront road is closed to vehicles from about 6 PM to 7:30 AM.
Getting there and parking
Ride in on a scooter and use two-wheeler parking on the side streets, then explore on foot. Auroville is about 12 km away – see our bike rental in Pondicherry page for delivery in town.
