Matrimandir Auroville: Visit Guide, Booking & Tips

The Matrimandir – “Temple of the Mother” – is the golden dome at the centre of Auroville. It is not a temple in the religious sense but a place for silent concentration, and it is the most photographed landmark in Auroville.

In this guide

What is the Matrimandir?

The Matrimandir was conceived by Mirra Alfassa, known as The Mother, as the “soul of Auroville”. The sphere is covered in golden discs and surrounded by large gardens and an ancient banyan tree. Inside is a white marble chamber with a crystal globe lit by a single ray of sunlight.

Two ways to visit

Viewing point

Most visitors see the Matrimandir from the viewing point, which is free. Go to the Auroville Visitors Centre, watch the short introduction video and collect a free pass. From there, a walking path leads through the gardens to a spot with a clear view of the dome. A free electric shuttle is available for people who find the walk difficult.

Inner chamber (concentration)

To sit in silence inside the inner chamber, you must book online through the official Matrimandir inner chamber booking service. Key points:

  • Bookings open a few working days in advance – book 3–5 days ahead. Same-day bookings are not possible.
  • The booking form is open in the morning hours only, and closed on Tuesdays.
  • Each visitor fills in their own form with their own email ID (close family members can be booked together).
  • Visitors’ concentration sessions are in the morning and are not held on Sundays and Tuesdays.
  • The Matrimandir closes in heavy rain, and bookings for that day are cancelled.

Timings, booking rules and closing days change from time to time. Always check matrimandir.org or the Auroville Visitors Centre before you go.

Rules to know

  • Silence is expected near and inside the Matrimandir.
  • Photography is not allowed inside the chamber.
  • Only children aged 10 and above can enter the Matrimandir; younger children stay at the Visitors Centre with an adult.
  • Dress modestly and arrive on time for your slot.

How to reach the Matrimandir

The Visitors Centre is roughly 10–12 km from Pondicherry town. The easiest way is to ride there: rent a scooter in Pondicherry or in Auroville and follow the signs from the ECR. If you prefer a car, book our Auroville sightseeing trip with a local driver.
